About the author

Barry Carpenter OBE CBE is the UK’s first Professor of Mental Health in Education, a Chair created for him at Oxford Brookes University. He is an internationally recognised leader in special education, with honorary professorships across the UK, Europe and Australia, and a former Fellow of the University of Oxford.

With over 40 years of experience, Barry has held senior leadership roles including Headteacher, Principal, Chief Executive and Academic Director. He has led national research projects for the Department for Education and developed widely used training resources for teachers of children with complex learning needs.

Barry is the author of more than 200 publications. His work on Engagement as Pedagogy has directly shaped national assessment policy, and his books are internationally acclaimed. He has lectured worldwide and co-founded the National Forum for Neuroscience in Special Education.

Awarded an OBE and CBE for services to children with special educational needs, Barry also led major national inquiries into mental health and autism. During the pandemic, he co-created the Recovery Curriculum, now used globally to support children’s wellbeing and resilience.
